Changing the world one Bouquet at a time
Since our opening
In Bloom Floral Boutique has recognized the important relationship
between our industry and the environment. A healthy sustainable
planet goes hand in hand with all of the beautiful flowers and
plants that we so proudly display in our boutiques.
How did
this start? Our first step towards reducing our carbon
footprint came from one of our supplies. Hartmont Candles began
offering a wonderful new soy candle that was displayed in votive
candle holders. To help reduce, reuse and recycle they came up
with the brilliant idea of having customers return their votives
for a rebate against their next one. This was a program that we
became very excited about because it also allowed us to reduce the
shipping and creating of extra containers. For us this was just
the beginning.
What
have we been doing? In Bloom has become well known for
our quality products but not everyone knows that most of fresh
flowers are locally grown here on Vancouver Island on family farms
and greenhouses. Many flower shops buy their products from
suppliers that import them from all over the world, most notably
South & Latin America. Buying local not only provides us with the
freshest possible product but again allows us to reduce our
overall carbon footprint.
Along with a general recycling
system for packaging and using local product we also use a
delivery service for transporting our deliveries to their
recipients. Instead of making specific trips for each delivery
using the service allows the drivers to meet at check points and
organize their routes for the fastest and most efficient delivery
cutting down on the amount of actual drive time and emissions.
One of the most frequently used
products in a flower shop outside of flowers and greens is the
plastic wrap that that bouquets are wrapped with. After some
searching and testing we are happy to say that we now wrap all of
our bouquets in a Biodegradable Cello wrap. Just this small step
alone will help keep twenty thousand feet of traditional
plastic wrap out of landfills.
What
else can we do? Starting July 1st In Bloom
will begin a new program to help reduce waste. Bring in your
old\dead flowers or plants and we will compost them for you! In
addition each time you bring something you will receive 10% off of
your purchase for that day.
This is a great system for
people who live in buildings that don’t have the option of
composting and a great way to keep your home always looking fresh!
